In brief

  • What changed: Microsoft AI finished pre-training MAI-Base-2, a new base model for its next generation of products.
  • Available now? Not as a consumer product. Post-training is still running.
  • Price: No consumer price. Microsoft says it plans to license weights to trusted partners through Azure Foundry.
  • Who cares: Enterprises watching Microsoft’s model stack, and Copilot or Azure customers tracking what comes next.

Microsoft AI said it finished pre-training MAI-Base-2, an MoE base model with 80 billion active parameters and 2.8 trillion total parameters.

First look: this story is based on Microsoft AI’s official announcement and has not been hands-on tested by Maitz.

The technical post went live on October 15, 2026 at microsoft.ai. According to the post, the company built its training pipeline end to end. Post-training is underway, and more results will follow.

What is new in the MAI-Base-2 announcement?

According to Microsoft AI, MAI-Base-2 beat every open-weight model it tested on held-out evaluations. The company reports 4–12x better pre-training FLOPs efficiency than DeepSeek-V4-Pro-Base, the strongest open base model in its comparison.

Training16,000 GB200 GPUs over 38 days
StatusPre-training done; post-training underway

Microsoft says training used organic data, not distillation from other models, and that MAI-Base-2 was pre-trained natively with vision in an encoder-free VLM setup.

MAI-Base-2 follows MAI-Base-1, which earlier powered MAI-Thinking-1. Preparations for MAI-Base-3 are already underway.

Why it matters

A base model is the layer other models are built on. The announcement does not mention a product you can use yet.

Microsoft says owning the full stack will let it license weights to trusted partners through Foundry. That is a signal for enterprises that want a large model with clear data provenance, not a download button.

What we don’t know yet

  • When post-training results ship, and which products get the model first.
  • Foundry licensing price, who counts as a trusted partner, and when access opens.
  • Language coverage and everyday task quality. The post does not list supported languages.

What it means for you

  • Copilot and Azure users: Nothing to change today. Watch Foundry for ready models built on this base.
  • Enterprises: Keep this as context for future weight licensing if you need a base model with clear data provenance.
