When someone says GTA 6 is a step beyond GTA 5, the first question should be which GTA 5. The 2013 release and the editions available today are different technical reference points. The central story is familiar, but newer hardware and updates have changed how it is presented. A comparison needs to separate a new world and cast from features already added to the older game.

Here, the story comparison concerns GTA V’s campaign. Technical references identify its 2022 PS5 release or PC Enhanced edition. The other side of the comparison is what has officially been revealed about GTA VI. This establishes differences in direction and announced features without pretending to deliver a review.

A central partnership replaces a trio

GTA V follows Michael, Franklin and Trevor through interwoven stories and perspectives. GTA VI centers on Jason and Lucia, whose official synopsis places them in a criminal conspiracy across Leonida and stresses their reliance on each other.

The interesting distinction extends beyond counting protagonists. A trio can bring separate lives into collision; a central pair draws attention to an ongoing relationship under pressure. That is an interpretation of the story’s announced premise, rather than a verdict on its writing or an account of its ending. How well the relationship develops will depend on the full game.

Learning a different place

GTA V’s story takes place in Los Santos and Blaine County. GTA VI moves to Vice City and Leonida. Rockstar also names locations including Leonida Keys, Grassrivers and Mount Kalaga.

For someone who already knows the roads of Los Santos, learning a different environment could be a substantial part of the appeal. Finding routes, choosing where to stop and discovering what happens between missions are central pleasures of an open world. A list of destinations, however, is not a measurement. It cannot establish a map-size multiplier, a quantity of playable hours or how freely every location can be explored.

Some technical features are already familiar

GTA V on PS5 offers a Fidelity mode targeting 30fps, alongside Performance and Performance RT modes targeting 60fps. PC Enhanced includes ray-traced global illumination and DLSS/FSR support. Comparisons that ignore those versions risk treating existing capabilities as brand-new developments.

For GTA VI, Sony lists DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, fast loading and 3D audio. Some of those feature categories already appear in GTA V on PS5. Their significance depends on how the new game uses them. A feature list cannot establish measured loading times, stable performance or the feel of an interaction.

This is why a useful technical comparison needs both a platform and a version. An old console screenshot, a modified PC installation and a current official showcase can produce striking visual contrasts while answering different questions.

Keep GTA Online in its own comparison

Another easy source of confusion is treating GTA V’s campaign and years of GTA Online additions as a single feature list. Businesses and activities added to the online service do not automatically belong to Michael, Franklin and Trevor’s story. GTA VI’s current single-player presentation calls for a campaign-focused comparison.

The revealed material establishes a change in narrative focus and setting. Assessing mission quality, freedom within the systems and the frequency of unexpected discoveries will require the finished game. Those are the questions that will decide how fresh the next GTA feels, beyond the immediate attraction of more detailed images.
