DeepSeek is an AI assistant available through web chat and a mobile app, an API for developers, and the Harness desktop workspace. It is worth considering when you want another tool for writing and understanding information, or when you are building software whose usage costs add up. These are three different routes: for help with wording, chat is a simpler starting point than a technical integration or a desktop task environment.

Updated October 4, 2026. This review is based on official documentation. No logged-in product testing was performed, and response speed, answer quality and quality in languages other than English were not measured. The interface images are official company demonstrations; the pricing screenshot comes from a public page. Our assessment concerns documented capabilities and potential suitability, rather than measured performance.

What each version provides

The app and web chat are the entry points for conversational questions and answers. The official download page advertises free chat in the app and offers mobile versions. That makes it a possible starting point for experimentation, but it does not establish that every feature, product or level of usage is free. Account-specific availability and limits were not verified for this review.

The API lets developers integrate the model into their own software. One example would be a system that sorts incoming inquiries and drafts replies for a customer-service representative. Price matters, but it is only part of that decision: how many drafts save time, and how many need correction? A usable interface, access to the right information and output checks remain part of the development work.

DeepSeek Harness is a separate desktop product in public preview. It is designed for working with files, code and background tasks, with plugins that extend its workspace. Receiving an answer in chat does not establish that a file was edited or a test was run. Those actions depend on the environment, tools and permissions available.

What the current model adds

DeepSeek introduced V4.1 Flash in September 2026. Current API documentation identifies it as deepseek-flash, and the vision guide describes support for text and image input. Documented uses include describing a picture, reading text from a screenshot and explaining a chart. These are visual-understanding capabilities; they do not establish image generation or video editing.

The API also documents a thinking mode that can be enabled or disabled, with adjustable effort. It is an option worth evaluating for tasks that require several considerations. Its existence does not prove that an answer is correct. We did not measure whether it improves output in other languages, how much time it adds or when its benefits justify the cost.

Where it might help with everyday work

A useful writing task can be modest: turn an awkward service description into a paragraph suitable for a customer. A good result would preserve the original prices, terms and promises while making the explanation clearer. A weaker result might sound convincing but introduce a benefit the service does not offer. That distinction matters more than the number of variations generated. This is an example of how to assess suitability, not a result tested for this review.

For documents, the potential value is turning difficult material into an explanation you can check. A product document could be summarized around three questions: what does it offer, what restrictions apply and what remains unclear? Such a summary is useful only if you can trace it back to the original details. Overlooking a small exception can change the entire conclusion.

For coding, advice and execution need separate checks. A chat explanation may suggest a direction, but a useful fix has to fit the project and pass its tests. This is where Harness may be relevant: its product description covers files and development tools. The API lets developers build their own tool integrations. In either case, a convincing answer is not evidence that a change works.

To see how to define a coding task with a verifiable result, read our Claude Code guide for beginners. Checking changes against the project and its tests is useful regardless of the tool you choose.

Using DeepSeek in other languages: what needs checking

For anyone working in a language other than English, language quality cannot be settled by a feature table. This review provides insufficient evidence to call DeepSeek’s output in any specific language excellent or poor. Natural wording and, for languages such as Arabic or Hebrew, right-to-left text display both need testing in the product you intend to use.

Use a real, non-sensitive sample to judge suitability: does the wording sound natural, are names and numbers preserved, and does a paragraph mixing two languages remain readable? For publication work, the editing time required matters more than one impressive answer. If another tool already works well for you, look for a noticeable improvement in your own task before switching.

For another approach to organizing repeated work, see our Claude Projects guide. If you compare tools, use the same source text and task; this review does not include a head-to-head test.

Is DeepSeek free, and how much does the API cost?

The official website advertises free chat in the app. The API has separate usage-based pricing measured in tokens, the units used to process text. In the price list checked for this review, one million uncached input tokens for deepseek-flash cost US$0.30 at peak times and US$0.15 off-peak. One million output tokens cost US$1.20 or US$0.60 respectively. Cached input has a lower rate.

DeepSeek Flash rates per million tokens: uncached input US$0.15 or US$0.30, output US$0.60 or US$1.20
Screenshot of DeepSeek’s official price list on October 4, 2026, cropped to the Flash column and its labels. All figures are US dollars per million tokens. CACHE MISS means uncached input; OUTPUT means generated output. This documents the price list, not an actual bill.

For illustration, 100,000 uncached input tokens and 10,000 total output tokens would cost US$0.042 at peak rates or US$0.021 off-peak. This is a calculation from the price list, not a measured task cost. Retries and longer output add to the bill. The documented peak windows are 01:00–04:00 and 06:00–10:00 UTC, Monday through Friday, excluding Chinese public holidays; all other times use off-peak rates. Check the price list again before connecting a production system.

Privacy and what to avoid entering

The privacy policy describes collecting content submitted to the service and using information to improve and train the technology. It states that personal data is processed and stored in China, and describes potential rights, including requesting exclusion from training, depending on where you live. The policy also warns against submitting sensitive personal data.

Public material or a fictional example is therefore a more cautious starting point than customer documents. Before transferring internal material, a business should check the terms for the specific product and its own policies. Installing an app on a computer does not establish that all processing happens locally. Extensions and connections to other services also require a permissions review.

Advantages and limitations to weigh

For occasional users, chat offers a relatively straightforward entry point. Developers may find the published pricing and integration options more interesting. Image understanding adds potential uses for screenshots and charts, while Harness is aimed at work that goes beyond conversational answers. Not everyone needs every layer, and choosing an unnecessarily complex route can add work.

Harness remains a preview product. It is therefore better suited to people prepared to evaluate its fit and accommodate changes than to those who need an already proven, stable workflow. The company’s benchmark claims do not replace testing on your own tasks, and they do not establish that it is better than every alternative.

Who should consider it?

DeepSeek belongs on the shortlist for drafting, explanations and work with non-sensitive material. It may also interest developers willing to compare cost, correction rates and working time on the same task. Harness calls for a separate decision: is there a specific job that justifies installation and permissions, and can you readily verify the outcome?

The bottom line: there is a reason to try it, especially when cost or integration into your own process matters. This review does not establish a reason to replace a tool that already works well for you. Judge the result after editing: fewer corrections and a quicker completed task would demonstrate value for your use case. If accurate writing in your language or confidentiality is essential, verify those requirements before making it part of your routine.

A small trial task before you decide

Choose a public description of a service you already understand and paste it into chat. You could use this prompt:

Rewrite this text in plain English (or your working language), using no more than 120 words. Preserve names, prices and terms exactly. Do not add promises or facts that are not in the source. At the end, identify any missing information without filling it in yourself.

This is a suggested exercise; we did not run it for the review. Check names and numbers against the source, read the result aloud and note how long corrections take. If you compare it with another tool, use the same source and request.

DeepSeek questions and answers

Can I use DeepSeek in languages other than English?

You can try it with a request in your own language, but wording quality and text direction were not tested for this review. We do not promise a localized interface or publication-ready output in languages other than English.

Is DeepSeek free?

The official download page advertises free chat in the app. The API is billed separately according to usage; the chat offer should not be treated as covering every product and usage level.

Can DeepSeek understand images?

The deepseek-flash API guide documents text and image inputs, including screenshots and charts. We did not test a visual task in an account or through the API.

Does the desktop app keep all data on my computer?

Installing Harness does not establish that. Check the model connection, plugins, permissions and data-processing terms of the service you use.
