ChatGPT is first and foremost a chat assistant, with a work mode, ChatGPT Work, for longer tasks, and it has a free plan. Grok Bot is built around permanent, named bots that share a cloud computer and run routines on their own; it has no permanent free plan, only a trial. In both, sensitive actions go through you.

The main difference: do you need an assistant that answers, or a team that keeps working when you’re not around?

Comparing the two tools is tricky, because both change almost every month. So everything here is based only on the official pages from SpaceXAI and OpenAI, as they appeared on October 3, 2026. We didn’t run the same task in both tools, and we won’t declare a single winner. If you’re new to Grok Bot, start with What is Grok Bot.

What’s the basic difference between them?

ChatGPT is built around conversation. According to the official usage guide, it has three modes: Chat for questions, brainstorming and short drafts; ChatGPT Work for tasks with a finished output, like a presentation, file analysis or a report; and Codex for software development. Work can run in the cloud, in an isolated environment managed by OpenAI, and in the desktop app you can sometimes also choose to work locally. The previous agent mode, ChatGPT agent, is no longer available, and the help center points to ChatGPT Work instead.

Grok Bot is built around bots. Each bot is a permanent team member with its own name, role, memory and conversation. All the bots in an account work on the same cloud computer, which has a browser, a file system and a command line, and that computer stays yours from one task to the next. So a site login you did once is kept, and one bot can pick up from a file another bot saved.

How much does each one cost?

Plan Official monthly price What’s relevant for this comparison
ChatGPT Free Free Limited access to ChatGPT Work, desktop app only
ChatGPT Go Varies by country More usage and scheduled tasks. According to the page, this plan may include ads
ChatGPT Plus Varies by country ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile
ChatGPT Pro Varies by country Three usage tiers, and includes Dots
Grok Bot via Cursor Pro $20 The cheapest way into Grok Bot
Grok Bot via SuperGrok $30 Also includes the Grok chatbot
Grok Bot via Cursor Pro+ / Ultra $60 / $200 More weekly usage

ChatGPT has a free tier and several paid plans; prices vary by country, so check the official pricing page. Grok Bot prices appear on the official pages in US dollars, before taxes. The full breakdown, including the free trial, is in How much does Grok Bot cost.

For what each ChatGPT plan includes, from Free to the three Pro tiers, see our ChatGPT plans review.

Two notes. First, ChatGPT has a permanent free plan, while Grok Bot only has a trial, which is usage credit with a 7-day window. Second, the amount of work in Grok Bot is measured in steps and tokens and resets every week, so it’s hard to compare “how much you get” based on price alone.

How do they compare in practice?

What do you need? Grok Bot ChatGPT
Cloud computer One persistent computer for all the bots in the account ChatGPT Work in the cloud runs in an isolated environment. In Dots, each dot has its own computer and browser
Permanent assistants with a role Several bots, each with a role and memory Dots, only on the Pro plan and certain business plans
Scheduled tasks Routines, up to 50 per bot Scheduled tasks on the Go, Plus and Pro plans
Connecting to services Plugins from the Marketplace Plugins on all plans
Working on your own computer Only if you approve it, and by default it asks every time Local work in the desktop app, when enabled
Choosing a model No, Cursor chooses The pricing page lists several models, depending on the plan
Several bots together A group with two to six bots Not checked in this article

It’s not about which is better, but what you need: a quick answer or a team that keeps working.

Where is Grok Bot stronger?

  • Repetitive work. A routine runs in the cloud even when your laptop is closed, and you can check its run history. The bot keeps the context of its role, so there’s no need to explain everything again every week.
  • Several roles in parallel. You can create a research bot, an email bot and a reporting bot, and put them in a group chat when work needs to be handed off between them.
  • Sites without a connection. The bot works in the cloud computer’s browser, and logins are kept. When a site asks for a password or a code, it hands control back to you.

Where is ChatGPT stronger?

  • A free way in. You can start on the free plan and pay only when you need more.
  • Quick questions and answers. For a one-minute task, like wording a message or explaining something, a regular chat is faster and simpler than a bot with a computer.
  • Many modes in one place. Chat, Work, deep research, images and voice, all in the same app.

What about Dots?

The part of OpenAI’s world most similar to Grok Bot is Dots: an always-on agent with its own computer and browser in the cloud. According to the pricing page, it’s included only in the Pro plan. A detailed comparison is in Grok Bot vs OpenAI Dots.

What about privacy?

In both cases the assistant can access whatever you’ve connected, so connect only what the task needs.

  • Grok Bot uses your Cursor account’s data settings. It requires cloud data storage and doesn’t work with Legacy Privacy Mode. According to the documentation, the computers the bots work on are currently located in the United States. All your bots share the same computer, so a separate bot is not a security barrier.
  • ChatGPT: according to the help center, on personal accounts the “Improve the model for everyone” setting determines whether your conversations and work are used to improve the models. On business plans, content is not used for training by default.

Details on the Grok Bot side are in our privacy and security guide.

Which tool fits which task?

Three everyday examples, to show where the difference is noticeable:

  1. “Write me a polite reply to a customer asking for a discount.” A one-minute task, with no files and no accounts. A regular chat is enough here, and free ChatGPT will do the job.
  2. “Read the three attached price quotes and build a comparison table in an Excel file.” A task with files and a finished output. Both tools fit: in ChatGPT this is exactly what Work is for, and in Grok Bot any bot can receive up to six files per message and return a spreadsheet.
  3. “Every Sunday at 8 a.m., check three competitors’ websites and give me a summary of changes.” This is where the difference is clearest. In Grok Bot this is a routine for a permanent bot, which remembers what happened last week and keeps its logins. ChatGPT has scheduled tasks on paid plans, and according to the official guide, cloud work suits this, since your computer doesn’t need to be on.

So which should you choose?

  • Choose ChatGPT if you mainly want answers, drafts and finished files, and if starting without paying matters to you.
  • Choose Grok Bot if you have work that repeats every day or every week, and you want it to run on its own and wait for your approval.
  • If you already have Cursor Pro or SuperGrok, Grok Bot is included, and it’s worth trying it on one task before you decide.

How we compared them

We compared the official pages from both sides on October 3, 2026: the official ChatGPT pricing page, the ChatGPT Work and Dots guides and the OpenAI help center, against the Grok Bot documentation and Cursor’s plans page. We didn’t run an identical task in both tools, so this is not a quality comparison.

FAQ

Is Grok Bot better than ChatGPT?

Neither wins outright: ChatGPT fits when you want an answer, a draft or a finished file; Grok Bot fits ongoing work that continues when you’re not around. We compared official pages only and didn’t run the same task in both.

What’s the difference between Grok Bot and ChatGPT Work?

ChatGPT Work runs tasks with a finished output, like a presentation, file analysis or a report, and in the cloud it uses an isolated environment managed by OpenAI. Grok Bot keeps permanent bots on one cloud computer that stays yours between tasks, so logins and saved files carry over.

Is Grok Bot the same as the Grok chatbot?

No. According to the help center, they are two different apps. You sign in to Grok Bot with a Cursor account, and usage limits in the Grok app have nothing to do with it.

Can I write in languages other than English in both tools?

Yes, you can write your requests in other languages. We tested Grok Bot’s language support in practice; details in our Grok Bot language support guide.

Does Grok Bot have a free plan?

Not a permanent one. There’s a free trial, which is usage credit for a 7-day window, and one long task can use up most of it.
