Google Gemini is a general AI assistant that writes, summarizes, researches, makes images and works with your files, and anyone with a Google Account can use it for free. The paid tiers start at $4.99 a month for Google AI Plus, then $19.99 for Pro and $99.99 or $199.99 for Ultra in the US. In the UK the same ladder runs £4.49, £18.99 and £79.99 or £189.99, and in eurozone countries such as Ireland, Germany and France it is €4.99, €21.99 and €99.99 or €219.99. So the useful question is not whether Gemini is good. It is whether the free tier already covers what you do, and what you actually get for each step up.
Update October 13, 2026: Google launched Gemini 4 Argon, its new flagship model, for Pro and Ultra subscribers and the paid API. What it offers and what it costs is in our Gemini 4 Argon review.

Updated October 6, 2026, for the free-tier change below; prices were checked October 5, 2026. Review type: first look based on official information. We did not test Gemini in our own account, so there is no score and no measurement of answer quality, speed or accuracy. Plans, prices and features come from Google’s subscriptions page, the Gemini Apps Help Center, the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub and Gemini’s release notes as they read on the update date. The screenshot below was taken from the public US pricing page that day.
Free-tier change from October 9, 2026
According to Google’s help page on changes to model access, starting October 9, 2026, people using Gemini with a personal account and no Google AI plan get only the Flash-Lite model. Flash and Pro will require a paid plan. Google AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash but not Pro, and Google says Plus subscribers get an email explaining when the change applies to them. Pro and Ultra keep all three models. The plan table below reflects the subscriptions page as checked October 5.
At a glance
- Bottom line: Gemini’s free tier is unusually generous, with Deep Research, Canvas and image generation included. Paying mainly buys higher usage limits, video tools, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, and cloud storage.
- Score: none, because we have not run a hands-on test.
- Good fit for: people who already live in Gmail, Drive and Docs, students, and anyone who wants a capable free tier before committing.
- Weaker fit for: people who need features that launch US-first, English-only or Ultra-only, and anyone uncomfortable with human reviewers reading a sample of chats.
- Price per month: US: Free · Plus $4.99 · Pro $19.99 · Ultra $99.99 or $199.99. UK: £4.49 · £18.99 · £79.99 or £189.99. Ireland, Germany, France: €4.99 · €21.99 · €99.99 or €219.99. Checked October 5, 2026. Prices and included features differ by country.
- Availability: the Gemini web app is offered in more than 70 languages and over 230 countries and territories, according to Google.
What Gemini is and who it is for
Gemini sits in the same category as ChatGPT and Claude, with one advantage that is hard to ignore: it lives inside your Google Account. If your email, files and calendar are already there, Gemini starts closer to your work than a stand-alone chatbot. A few named tools come up again and again in the plan comparison, so they are worth knowing:
- Deep Research runs a longer research job across many sources and returns a report.
- Canvas is a side-by-side workspace for editing a document or code.
- Gemini Live is continuous voice conversation.
- Gemini Notebook is a research and writing assistant grounded in material you provide.
- Skills are saved instructions you can rerun, and they are replacing Gems. We covered the switch in Google Rolls Out Gemini Skills to Replace Gems.
There are desktop apps as well. Google released Gemini for Windows (Windows 10 or later) on September 10, 2026, opened from anywhere with Alt + Space, and there is a separate Mac app.
How we put this review together
We read Google’s subscriptions page in its US, UK, Irish, German and French versions, the Help Center pages on where Gemini is available and how usage limits work, the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub and the release notes from July to September 2026. Comparing regional versions of the pricing page is a quick way to see which features are not universal. We did not sign in, send prompts or score outputs, and we say so wherever a claim is untested.
Gemini pricing: what each plan adds

| Google AI Plus | $4.99 | £4.49 | €4.99 | 2x the free usage limits, video generation and Daily Brief, 200 Flow credits, Gemini in Gmail and Vids, 400 GB storage |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99 | £18.99 | €21.99 | 4x the free usage limits, 1,000 Flow credits, Gemini in Docs too, a 1M-token context window, file uploads up to 1,500 pages, the Jules coding agent, Chrome auto browse, YouTube Premium Lite, 5 TB storage |

Two details matter more than they look. First, usage limits are not a fixed message count. Google’s Help Center says they are compute-based: they depend on how complex the prompt is, which model and feature you use, and how long the chat runs. They refresh every five hours until you hit a weekly cap, and you can buy AI credits to extend them. “4x” is a ratio, not a number you can plan a workload around. Second, the plans are for adults with a personal Google Account. Work and school accounts get Gemini through a different setup. All prices above are monthly, as listed on Google’s regional pages on October 5, 2026.
Students: according to Gemini’s release notes, eligible college students can get a year of Google AI Pro in the US, or Google AI Plus in more than 140 countries, at no cost. The offer can be redeemed until December 31, 2026 and renews at the standard price unless you cancel. On October 5, the UK, Irish and German pricing pages advertised the free year of Plus for students, marked as ending soon.
Features that depend on where you live
This is where Gemini gets less simple. Google says plan features vary by country, and the regional pages prove it. The US Pro plan lists the Jules coding agent, Chrome auto browse, YouTube Premium Lite and Google Home Premium. The UK Pro plan keeps YouTube Premium Lite but lists none of the other three. The Irish page lists Google Home Premium but not Jules, Chrome auto browse or YouTube Premium Lite, and the German page lists Google Home Premium and YouTube Premium Lite but not Jules or Chrome auto browse.
Two newer features are US-only for now, according to the release notes. Daily Brief, the morning digest built from your Gmail, Calendar and chats, started rolling out to Google AI subscribers 18 and over in the US, and it is not mentioned on the UK, Irish or German pages. Chrome auto browse is rolling out in preview to Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US.
Gemini Spark, Google’s agent that carries out tasks on your behalf, is limited to Ultra subscribers, in English and in supported countries. The new flagship model, Gemini 4 Argon, was announced on September 30 but is not in the app. As we reported in our Gemini 4 Argon story, it is going first to a small group of cyber defenders, with paid API customers and Ultra subscribers next and no date given. Don’t buy Ultra today expecting Argon.
Privacy: what Google does with your chats
Read this before uploading a work document. According to the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub:
- A subset of chats is read by human reviewers, including trained service providers, to improve Google’s services. Reviewed chats are kept for up to three years and are not deleted when you delete your activity.
- Gemini Apps Activity is kept for 18 months by default. You can change that to 3 months, 36 months or indefinitely.
- With
Keep Activityturned off, chats stay with your account for 72 hours and are not used to improve Google’s models unless you send feedback. Temporary chats are not used to train models either. - Even with that setting off, Google still uses chats to respond to you and to protect its services, which can involve human review.
If you are in the EU, the UK or Switzerland
In the European Economic Area and Switzerland, the Gemini apps are provided by Google Ireland Limited; everywhere else, including the UK and the US, the provider is Google LLC. Where EU or UK data protection law applies, the Privacy Hub says Google relies on several legal bases: performance of a contract to answer your prompts, legitimate interests to improve its services and models (which is where using chats for model improvement sits), legal obligations, and your consent for features such as Memory, Voice Match and letting Google use your audio and Gemini Live recordings to improve its services. Consent can be withdrawn at any time. Under the GDPR you can also object to the processing of your personal data, or ask for inaccurate personal data in Gemini’s answers to be corrected, through Google’s Help Center or the Report legal issue option under a response.
Heads-up: Google itself asks you not to enter confidential information you would not want a reviewer to see. Client files, medical details and financial records do not belong in a personal account running on default settings.

Which plan should you pick?
| If you… | Look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| use AI now and then for writing and questions | Free | Deep Research, Canvas and images are already included |
| keep hitting limits or need more storage | Plus | double the limits and 400 GB for $4.99, £4.49 or €4.99 |
| work with long documents in Docs every day | Pro | long context, Gemini in Docs, 5 TB |
| produce a lot of video or want the Spark agent | Ultra, after checking your country | several headline features are region-limited |

Pros and cons
Pros: a free tier that includes tools competitors charge for; a cheap middle step with Plus; tight integration with Gmail, Drive and Docs; storage bundled into every paid plan; Windows and Mac apps.
Cons: headline features often arrive US-first, English-first or Ultra-only; usage limits are hard to predict; human review, with reviewed chats kept for up to three years; anyone who built Gems has to adapt to Skills; what you get on a given plan depends on your country.
How it compares
If you are shortlisting, our DeepSeek review covers a low-cost option for developers, and the Kimi review focuses on document work. For a project-based workflow you can compare with our Claude Projects guide. The fairest test is to give two tools the same real task and time how long it takes to fix each result.

Verdict
For most people, Gemini’s free tier is the right place to start, and it may be all you need. If you work inside Gmail and Docs all day and keep running into limits, Pro is a sensible upgrade, provided the specific feature you want is offered in your country. Ultra is for a small group, and some of what justifies its price is still regional. Whatever you choose, decide what you are willing to upload, and turn off Keep Activity for sensitive work.
